Next Resident Evil film in 3D - Report

Paul W.S. Anderson tells horror film site that he will use Avatar camera system for first installment in a new zombie trilogy.

Like one of the brain-slurping zombies that populate his Resident Evil film adaptations, director Paul W.S. Anderson wants more. According to a Comic-Con report on horror film site ShockTilYouDrop.com, Anderson has confirmed that he will write and direct a 3D fourth entry in the series, and that the project would be the first in a new three-film arc.

"I wanted to kick off a brand new trilogy," Anderson told the site. "I'm really excited we're doing it [in 3D], and we're using the same camera system [James] Cameron used for Avatar. There are a lot of exciting things about this one. I don't regard it as Resident Evil 4; I regard it as a retooling and rebirth of the entire franchise."

The film will be called Resident Evil: Afterlife and will once again see Milla Jovovich star as gun-toting heroine Alice. ShockTilYouDrop.com reports the film is expected to open September 17, 2010, and will feature new characters pulled from the game series.

Resident Evil: Afterlife was originally the name of the third film in the series, which was eventually released as Resident Evil: Extinction. Even before shooting began on Extinction, a fourth film in the series had been planned. That project was to be set in Tokyo and filmed on location.

It's been a newsworthy Comic-Con for Anderson fans. Yesterday, James Wan, who cowrote and directed Lionsgate's horror film Saw, told a different horror film site that he would be cowriting and directing the Castlevania film Anderson is producing.

The RE movies are horrible... they screwed it up so bad. They messed up Jill bad enough but man, Claire didnt even slightly remind me of her video game counterpart. Claire is a sweet girl but also tough and can hold her own, they just totally messed her up bad, and man, don't even get me started on Wesker. (i never cared about Carlos so he doesnt count) and they also went that cliche zombies take over the world route. One of the things I always like about RE is they never went that way. The incidents on the games are always isolated, and you feel like there is a place for them to escape to, but again they screwed that up too. Just give it up, anderson, seriously. If you cant pay the source material the respect it deserves, leave it to someone who can

There is no hope for the RE films. The first one was pushing it. A fourth one, reboot or not, is more ludicrous than Saw 6 (gaurantee its coming). Whereas the RE movies sucked and were stupid, the Saw films were good and were retarded. They did ruin everything, I wrote a 30 page review of the trilogy and how ungodly abominable it is. That's how bad the RE trilogy blows. The super human theme was the entire point of Resident Evil, but he did it incredibly wrong. They never got human experimentation to work the way they wanted it to, thats why it creates zombies, and the direct experiments resulted in lickers, and tyrants. Having a female krauser/wesker running around is retarded, as we all know they are both extremely pushing the believability of the franchise. Thank god they're both dead, SUPPOSEDLY. Maybe Wesker will come back and die, again, and after 2 deaths and 2 total near death getting pwneds he will stay dead.

Normally, when a franchise gets a reboot, a new writer and director steps in. The Resident Evil films desperately need that. The first movie was passable at best, while the other two were disaturous. They hardly hold to the original plot, and are gradually getting worse. I'd love to see someone else have the chance to do it right. What the hell is so hard about sticking to source material? If Anderson wanted to write his own Resident Evil story, he should have created his own characters, sub plot, monsters, rather than ruining the original stories we all love. This is mainly in reference to the second movie. Yeahh the movie was based on the 3rd game, but it seemed like he took all the ideas he liked, and set them behind his undeniable need to have some super human hero save the day. What was wrong with just having Jill kick Nemesis in the balls, that of what she does so well in the game. The movie made Jill look like a supreme douche bag. Anderson Blows. He's just one of those guys that if I ever saw him on the side of the street, I'd punch him in the face. No one should be allowed to be that stupid.

    @ ReebenHauser

I agree. If they do remake the RE franchise, should be written and given the atmospheric tone of Lovecraft stories...No super humans like you say (except for Tyrants ), the horror either makes the characters go mad or kill themselves from learning too much.
However I'm all for a movie completely done how the first game told the story...I wouldn't care if I knew what was gonna happen, because I know there will be a majority who still don't know that a dog jumps through the window! Or expect to see something like "Yawn", "Neptune", and even a freaky-ass Hunter open the door behind you for the first time!
If they film it right by getting the pacing, atmosphere, story, and characters done proper...I'd still s*** myself. Because I'll get immersed into film just how I did with the game. And for those who haven't played it, they'll finally get to see what many of us experienced...
Anderson will obviously never understand that! That's why he blows dogs for quarters man!

What a waste of such a genre defining game. All his 3 RE films are crap. Whats the point in re-creating the series in 3D by a different Director when Capcom has already released Re Degeneration and may also be working on subsequent releases.
The only most perfect game-to-movie adaptation was Silent Hill. Is there any other Silent Hill movie in development?

I was really disappointed in Resident Evil Extinction =/ especially in the actress who was "claire redfield" she didn't look OR ACT like the claire redfield that i adore D: ... =.=;;; i'm getting really tired of people just choosing horrible actors to play game/anime/cartoon characters that we grew up with, look at what they did to dragon ball z and Dead or Alive Dx

I liked the first one. the second one sucked except for the plentiful references to the games, and I quite enjoyed Extinction for what it was. I'm looking forward to a fourth installment. just hoping it's not a rehash of what's gone on in the games. I'd rather the connections and characters are there, but in different situations. Like degeneration then! and as for the film series not being a success... I think you'll find that it's Sony Pictures biggest franchise AFTER the spider-man trilogy. so, if a new film can be made, they'll make it. I find it funny that people moan about it being written ir directed by anderson... we should count ourselves lucky, at least it isn't Uwe Boll?!

I guess that there are highly unprofessional director like Paul W.S Anderson able to make a crappy movie. How the hell he actually hold that license for so long? Even Resident Evil: Degenaration is a thousand times better than all those movie directed by him. Start all over again, and please, No Milla!

Hasn't Resident Evil suffered enough at the hand of Paul W.S. Anderson, Why make it worse?!?! Bad enough what they did to Nemesis in the 2nd film, Lucky that put me off from watching the 3rd film. if they make a 3D film could it not be like Resident Evil: Degeneration, at least that sticks to story from the Games, not making any old crap up as it when along.

What the hell is wrong with Capcom? They did RE: Degeneration using one of their developers, Hiroyuki Kobayashi they ought to keep doing that and give that washed up wannabe Anderson the boot right where the sun don't shine.
